In a recent session on youth and mental health, Dr. Jean Clinton spoke about the importance of sleep for kids. It was the first time I heard the term “sleep architecture”. Apparently creating the conditions for a good night sleep can be complex! If your child is not sleeping well, here are some suggestions from the Canadian Pediatric Society to help support a healthy sleep routine.
Manage;
- Establish family media plans, and set clear boundaries
Meaningful;
- Prioritize active, purposeful screen use over passive scrolling
- Ensure sleep and physical activity come first
Model;
- Adults check their own screen habits
- Maintain screen-free mealtimes
- Keep devices out of bedrooms
Monitor;
- Watch for red flags (irritability, sleep loss, academic drops)
- Maintain open dialogue with your child about whether they feel rested
Thanks for helping your child to be rested and ready for the school day!
Happy Thanksgiving,
Dale Martens
